Is Oberheim about to release the TEO-5? A few weeks before Superbooth, images of what looks to be a new Oberheim synth have been leaked online. The Oberheim TEO-5 looks suspiciously similar to the Sequential Take 5.

The leak was discovered by a user on gearspace.com, who shared a few pictures allegedly leaked by a European retailer. If the images are real, Oberheim will likely unveil the new synth at Superbooth 24 in Berlin in a few weeks.

Oberheim has partnered with Sequential several times, most notably for the OB-6 – a version of the Prophet-6 with Oberheim voice boards. Consequently, it would make perfect sense to apply the same concept to the more compact and affordable Sequential Take 5.

The (presumably 5-voice polyphonic) Oberheim TEO-5 appears to have two oscillators per voice with triangle, saw, and variable pulse waves, as well as oscillator sync and X-Mod. In addition to this, the synth seems to have a sub oscillator and noise. The filter is the classic SEM-style state-variable affair with a continuously variable characteristic from lowpass to notch to highpass. A bandpass mode is also available.

Everything else – the preset system, display, arpeggiator, sequencer, and effects – seems very similar, if not identical to the Sequential Take 5. This would be exactly what the two companies did with the Prophet-6/OB-6. Judging by the pictures, the envelopes and LFOs also offer similar capabilities to the Take 5.

A more affordable and compact alternative to the OB-X8 and OB-6 would be a nice addition to Oberheim’s line-up. We’ll keep you updated!

Price

Oberheim has yet to announce the new synth. If it is indeed real, we can expect it to arrive in time for Superbooth 24 in Berlin, which begins on May 16. The leak states a price of €1699.
