The new PRS SE NF3 adds Narrowfield pickups to the SE lineup, transforming the Silver Sky-style model into a super versatile guitar.

PRS SE NF3

Paul Reed Smith has now launched the PRS SE NF3, which is fitted with three PRS Narrowfield DD (Deep Dish) “S” pickups. It is the first time this pickup style has been used outside the US Core models, and it could be a big move for the Maryland guitar company.

Evolution of Design

Essentially, the NF3 is a Silver Sky-style instrument, a model that has been very popular for the company since its initial launch. The design was taken from the company’s  EG model around 35 years ago, so it is all an evolution over time.

Lightweight

Specifications include a lightweight poplar body and a 22-medium jumbo fret bolt-on maple neck with a choice of rosewood or maple fretboard, which has their Wide Thin neck profile. Hardware includes a PRS-patented trem system and tuners.

  • Metallic Orange
  • Pearl White
  • Ice Blue Metallic
  • Gun Metal Gray

Who is it for?

PRS says these Narrowfield pickups cover everything from rock to blues, gospel, country, or jazz. This guitar is for everyone (as long as you get on with the Wide Thin neck profile) who wants an instrument with a trem system.

Options & Affordability

The choice of colours is pretty good at launch, and having either maple or rosewood fretboards is also welcome. The Silver Sky had to wait a few years until it had that maple fretboard option. Price-wise, they are also relatively affordable, and so I can see them being popular with many musicians.

They also come with a PRS gig bag, which I have always found to be a good-quality, well-made design for travelling with your guitar.

I think PRS has made a great decision with this new release, and I would like to try one out as soon as it is available.
