ALM / Busy Circuits has turned the MFX Eurorack module into an effect pedal. With 18 algorithms, stereo I/O, and loads of adjustable parameters, the new ALM MFX Pedal looks like a great addition to any live set. And it works with guitars, too!
ALM MFX Pedal
Two years after the ALM MFX Eurorack module, the manufacturer now presents the MFX Pedal at Superbooth 24. And why shouldn’t a module that turned out to be an extremely versatile, easy-to-use, and musical multi-effect work as a pedal, too?
Like the module, the ALM MFX Pedal has a small display and a data wheel for selecting algorithms and adjusting values. The 18 effect algorithms include everything from various delays and reverbs to dynamics, distortion, ensemble, and phaser to wacky effects like resonator, bit corrupter, and ring/freq modulator. Some algorithms are modeled after classic hardware effects like the Ursa Major Space Station and Alesis QuadraVerb. All effects offer several adjustable parameters, which you can freely assign to the controls.
Expression and MIDI
Speaking of controls: To make the effects usable in a pedal format, ALM had to make some changes. Instead of the module’s three CV inputs, the pedal offers two assignable knobs and an expression pedal input. In addition to this, the effects are MIDI-controllable (CC and Clock), for which the pedal has a 5-pin MIDI input. There’s also a tap-tempo foot switch, as well as a bypass switch.
Like the module, the ALM MFX Pedal offers stereo inputs and outputs. ALM says that it works with instrument and line-level sources. You can choose between true bypass and buffered DSP bypass. Moreover, you can save your own presets for each algorithm. All settings are retained when the pedal is powered off – just what you want in a live performance device.
What’s not to like? A versatile multi-effects module that doesn’t come with any unnecessary ballast will certainly work well as a pedal, too. I think we’ll see the ALM MFX Pedal in many electronic live setups soon. Whether the guitarists will embrace it is another story. There are simply too many great multi-effects for guitar out there already.

The ALM MFX Pedal will be available soon for about $370 / £319 / €380.
