This is Footy Country opens on a broken-down bus on the side of a rural road. The coach on the footy team travelling on the bus is on a call with the manager of the club, concerned they won’t make it to the game in time. The club manager is not accepting defeat or a forfeit. She grabs the keys to the old worn-out team bus and hits the road. as she speeds around the small town, she recruits any and every one she can find. Young and old, past players and locals who have never touched a ball. All the new recruits trust in the club manager and are determined to support their local and beloved team. Clothed in the uniforms from generations of teams in the past the rag tag team burst onto the field to face their opponents. The ref blows the whistle…

It’s Christmas Eve in COUNTRY Australia. An incongruous scene greets a man taking some air outside a pub, a couple of kangaroos and a reindeer! It’s Dasher and he’s lost Santa and his crew. Lonely, he walks the streets on his own searching for someone familiar. First, he thinks he sees something familiar, but it’s just a dog wearing novelty antlers. Becoming increasingly anxious, across an illuminated Santa on a decorated lawn he thinks he’s safely home, but no, it’s only a decoration. Dawn on Christmas Day a little girl finds Dasher sleep on her lawn. She knows what’s wrong, and how to fix it. She leads Dasher to the Telstra phone booth over the road, and calls Santa for help, and Santa answers. He’s just a phone call for all kids this Christmas.

In the scene one of the group, a young woman poses a ‘Would you rather?’ about drink driving, and it becomes apparent to the friends and the audience, that she is talking to her partner who is also seated in the room, thus changing the dynamic of the scene. The film needed an authentic sense of ease and levity that would be natural amongst a group of friends. Their familiarity would initially set the scene with the game and create a level of comfort and expectation in the audience, that we could dramatically subvert for a sharp tonal shift and emotional gear change when the young woman, Jade oders her ‘Would you rather?’ to the group.
