Rory McIlroy set to represent Ireland for first time the Olympics M Paris.
Young man, 35 years old, born in northern IrelandHe will compete in his second Olympic Games after completing his performance in Tokyo in 2021.
McIlroy was born in Northern Ireland and was eligible to represent the British team, but chose to play for Ireland for three years.
In Tóquio, McIlroy and teammate Shane Lowry ended up missing out on the medals in fourth place, but the duo now have a place in Paris.
Why does Rory McIlroy represent Ireland?
McIlroy revealed that his decision to represent Ireland rather than Great Britain at the Olympics was down to a decision he made during his amateur career.
Before turning professional, McIlroy played for Ireland as a four-time champion, saying he had no reason to move to the Olympics.
Under an agreement between the Irish Olympic Association and the British Olympic Association, athletes can choose which team they wish to represent.

“I have a bad feeling about the Olympics because I always try to stay neutral and I’m being offered this option,” he added. “What were you going to do?” McIlroy said.

“Tokyo felt like a throwback to the days of love.” All the leagues are here. Seeing people playing games that haven’t been played in decades. I’ve gained a lot of experience and I’m sure Paris will be even better because I’ll be at two more events.
“It's a bit like the Ryder Cup, please leave feedback before you try it.” I'm excited to be back.
Speaking further about his decision in 2021, McIlroy said: “Because things have become more difficult for me to do what I need to do.”
“My feeling about it was more, what are other people going to think?” And after I pulled my head back and tried to do what was certain to me, it was easy. He was fighting like all those things.
“As I mentioned above, since I was trying not to upset you in any way, it was actually a very easy decision. The decision was to play golf in the country or in the country that I had always played in during my junior and amateur seasons and now not play professionally.
“Like the Tenham Olympics gave me that choice, I didn’t really have a choice, because I had to spend a lot of my life playing golf in Ireland, so why would I change just because the tournament changed?” That was my decision.
