Portsmouth striker Colby Bishop will undergo heart surgery after undergoing a scan. Before the season Assinalaram or “potential abyss”.
The 27-year-old was one of Portsmouth's standout players last season, scoring 21 goals as the club won League One and secured promotion to the Championship.
But after returning to pre-season training this month, he will undergo a routine medical examination.
A statement from Portsmouth on the third day read: “During a routine cardiac scan as part of the club’s two pre-season medicals, a potential risk to Colby Bishop was identified.
“After further discussions with our cardiologists, our medical team and Colby, it was decided that the best course of action this year was for the player to undergo immediate surgery to correct the problem.
“Everyone at Portsmouth Football Club fully supports Colby and his family.”
Colby, in turn, revealed that he will undergo an “innovative procedure” to return to football.
“It's been a really uncertain time for me, my wife and my new baby,” Bishop said. “It's definitely not the start of the season I was expecting to receive this news.”
“Despite the difficult circumstances, I am extremely pleased to have been referred to a world-leading specialist for an innovative procedure to help me recover to full fitness.
“I would like to thank everyone at Portsmouth for their continued support. I am looking forward to playing in front of everyone at Fratton Park and I will not be back.
